Anna & Marley

Our story started a few years before we met, when Anna and Marley’s sister Elizabeth were studying at Trent University together. After a few near-meetings in Peterborough and Ottawa, one night Marley was finishing up a shift at the mall when she heard a stranger ask “are you Elizabeth’s sister?” It was Anna. Anna kindly drove Marley home from her shift that day. We hit it off. Less than a month later we were dating, and we recently celebrated our fifth wedding anniversary.

We love our time together, and our time spent with our six nieces and nephews. We have each always known we one day wanted to be moms. After a lot of conversations together, and with our friends, and family, we feel that an open adoption would be an incredible opportunity to grow our family. We have learned a lot about ourselves through this process and are hoping to have an opportunity to get to know you more, too!

About Us

We are a relaxed couple who enjoy being outdoors. We are lucky to have a close support network of family and friends. Our home base is in Ottawa, but we just returned from nine months living in Igloolik, Nunavut. We enjoyed life in the North and hope we have another chance to go back. We have a one-year old Australian Labradoodle puppy named Rubeus. She is very fun to be around and loves everyone she meets.

Since we started dating in 2012, Marley’s family more than doubled in size, with her mom’s husband and four children (plus spouses and their children) joining our clan. We are always being asked when we will be starting our family and our loved ones are thrilled that we are in the process of growing our family through adoption.

About Anna (by Marley)

Anna has four siblings. Her parents are incredible, hardworking people who instilled creativity and a joy for life into all their children. Anna grew up in central Ottawa and has close ties to her friends she grew up with. Anna cares deeply about the people she knows and loves. She has an affinity for children and worked from ages 12-24 as a babysitter and nanny. She once did the math and she has cared for over 100 kids! She could tell you all of their names, and probably most of their likes and dislikes, too. For the past three years, her favourite day of the year has been having all our nieces and nephews over for a sleepover on Labour Day weekend (even though it means we barely get any sleep).

Anna is ambitious and creative. She is always pushing herself to try something new, whether it’s baking through a challenging cook book, making baby quilts for our friends and family’s kids, knitting sweaters, or learning kickboxing. Most of all, Anna is thoughtful and loving. She has so much room in her heart for others.

About Marley (by Anna)

Marley is by far the kindest, most patient, and funniest person I have ever met. With our nieces and nephews, she always has time for one more story, one more round of catch, or one last dance party. She loves teaching them about math and science and is so gentle with them when they aren’t feeling well. She is also the best back scratcher, just ask our 9-year-old nephew! Marley takes great pride in her work. She is so passionate about mental health and people’s wellbeing (big and little!) and that is shown in her everyday life, both at home and at work.

Marley is always up for an adventure but is equally content to stay at home listening to a good podcast or gardening. She’s got the worst singing voice of anyone I know, but that doesn’t stop her from belting her favourite songs. I can’t wait to see her be a Mum and watch her love, teach, and care for our child. Marley embraces everyone with open arms and an open heart, and I know that together we’ll embrace you and your family. She loves her family so much, and she makes that clear to us all! I’ve never met someone more enthusiastic about life than Marley.

Our Home & Community

We are fortunate to live in central Ottawa, a bike ride away from two of Anna’s sisters and one of Marley’s sisters. Marley’s work at the hospital is within walking distance. Her walk to work is one of her favourite parts of the day. We bought our home from the original owner five years ago and have enjoyed working on improvements and design since; we always have a project on the go! Since the pandemic started, we have of course been spending more time at home. We have been enjoying board games by the fire and taking long walks with our dog.

We are fortunate to have a strong community around us, both in Ottawa and across Canada. Before the pandemic, we enjoyed taking road trips to visit family and friends, and we look forward to doing so again when it is safe. We have been staying connected with our family and friends virtually lately, with online games nights and regular calls.

Our Thoughts about Parenting & Adoption

Thoughts on Parenting

Both of us have always known we wanted to be moms. Marley has been interested in adopting for a long time, and after a few years of being married we realized it would be the best fit for us to grow our family. We learned a lot throughout our home study and PRIDE (Parent Resources for Information, Development, and Education) training, which we took back in the winter of 2019.

Each of us grew up with different parenting styles and have seen Anna’s siblings parenting first-hand. For us, the most important element of parenting seems to be consistent, safe, unconditional love. In our PRIDE training, we found Barbara Coloroso’s work to be enlightening: that by using consistent strategies, you can help children grow into responsible, resourceful, resilient, and compassionate adults. We hope to apply these practices when we become parents.

Thoughts on Adoption

We have both known families who have grown through adoption throughout our lives. We are especially fortunate to have close friends who have two beautiful children through adoption who have helped us navigate this process. Our favourite part of our PRIDE training was having the opportunity to hear from all kinds of adoptive families and birth parents. It made it clear to us that every relationship is as unique as the individuals involved, and that the most important thing is to always focus on the child’s best interest.

Closing Thoughts

Thank you for reading through our profile. We hope it’s given you sense of who we are and what kind of parents we would like to be. We hope to work with you to build a relationship and adoption plan so your child will always know where they came from. We also understand that this can be a difficult journey, and there may be times where you need more space. We would feel honoured to become part of your extended family through adoption and welcome you as part of ours. We know that family is who you chose, and that all good relationships need to be nurtured. We look forward to getting to know you better.
