We're a bunch of people who like to monkey around on computers. We're writers and designers by profession and parents by adoption. We created Canada Adopts! in 2001 pretty much because there was nothing like it out there at the time. And boy, could we have used it. Having worked at some of Canada’s largest and most demanding media organizations, we figured we were prepared for anything. But then we came to adoption, and everything suddenly changed. It tested us in ways we never imagined. After we finished stumbling through the process the first time, we figured there had to be a better way to do things the next time around. But you know what, there wasn’t. The process was as overwhelming as ever (there is a reason, after all, why you'll often find the words "adoption" and "daunting" in the same sentence); information was scarce; resources were slim; and support services were just about non-existent. We were more or less on our own. Our first thought was to put together a guidebook to help others get through the process. But books don't change. Adoption, on the other hand, is always evolving. Today, more than seven years later, it's still evolving. And we'd like to think that we are, too. But some things about us are still the same. We're still a place to find loads of Canadian-specific information, resources and tips from the trenches that you can't find anywhere else. We're still a place to connect with lots of really neat people from all across the country and the world. And we're still a place to get cracking on that family you've always dreamed of. But most of all, we're still a celebration of adoption by people whose lives have been forever changed and enriched by it. Think of us as a work in progress. We'll be adding new stuff all the time. So don't forget to check back with us. How We Got Here (The Abridged Version) It was a dark and stormy night… Actually, it was the late 90s and we were lost. Our adoption roadmap wasn’t working. So we decided to create our own. Eventually that roadmap became this website. The idea behind it was pretty straightforward: To create a place where Canadians struggling with infertility or unplanned pregnancy could come together and just be themselves. No more worrying about being judged. No more feeling like their lives were under a microscope, out of control, or beaten down from being picked at, poked, pushed and prodded. Well, more than seven years later we’re happy to say that hundreds of adoptive parents and birth parents have visited us. And many have had their lives changed through us. In some cases all it took was one little click of a mouse. So whether you want to change your life, take more control over it, or just want to gather information to make more informed decisions about your adoption journey, we hope that you enjoy your visit here.
