Canada Adopts! is a community and a call to action; giving hopeful adoptive parents and birth parents tools and support to make their lives a little easier.

(We figure if we can ask couples on our Waiting Parents Registry to sum up their entire lives in a thousand words, we should be able to tell you who we are in a lot less; not that our name gave us away).

We were launched in 2001 after our founders, adoptive parents from Toronto (pictured above), became accidental advocates. Having stumbled through the adoption process for what to them seemed like a very long time, they figured there had to be a better way to do things. But alas, after some sleuthing around, they realized there wasn’t.

Their first thought – after “oh, so it’s not just us” -- was to write a guidebook to help other waiting couples and challenge some of the stigmas and stereotypes that were out there. But books change; adoption, on the other hand, is always evolving. So after spending a year interviewing dozens of people -- professionals, birth parents, waiting and other adoptive parents -- and reading everything they could get their hands on, they created this website instead.

Six years later, adoption is still evolving -- and we are, too. Some things, though, haven’t changed.

We're still a celebration of adoption by people whose lives have been altered and – need we add? -- enriched by it.

We're still a place to find lots of really interesting stuff and people you can’t find anywhere else.

And we're still a place to get cracking on the family you’ve always dreamed of.

But first and foremost we're still a community – one that understands there’s more than one way to create a family and feels passionately that adoption is a wonderful way to do it. Because when you get right down to it, isn’t that what adoption – and the Net -- is all about: making connections?

No matter which stage in your adoption journey you’re at, which path you’re on or which hurdle you’re facing, feel free to join us -- and use us. And when you’re done here, don’t forget to go out and create a community of your own. Others have. And then some.

Which probably explains why we’re the only adoption site in the world with an annual picnic named after it. (Thanks Lynnette and the rest of the gang in Nova Scotia – hope you had a blast this year!).
