OK, in most provinces in Canada they’re known as social workers. But in Ontario, where they’re often self-employed, they’re known as private adoption practitioners.
Private adoption practitioners are provincially-licensed specialists who provide a variety of pre- and post-adoption services to both prospective adoptive parents and birth parents in a private adoption. If you’re a hopeful adoptive parent, they can help you with things like your home study, which is the first step in the adoption process.
And if you’re a would-be birth parent, they can help you make sense of the process through free counselling and support and put you in touch with waiting parents. And remember, as a prospective birth parent, all of the assistance you receive is free, whether or not you go through with your adoption plan.
