Adoption Risks: Just Before
the Placement and After As for how you'll feel, after all those months of discussing the placement, you may feel relieved that it's finally over. But your relief will be tinged with sadness. Some woman who give birth experience post-partum depression and you may, too -- but for different reasons.
In the months and even years ahead, expect to have painful reminders of your decision. Seeing other babies, you may feel a pang of guilt. Even the sight of a pregnant woman may trigger conflicting emotions. The hardest times will be holidays and festive occasions: Mother's Day, your child's birthday, Christmas. The good news is that in time, your feelings will change, evolve and hopefully be easier to handle. Still, no matter where your child is, a part of him/her will always remain in your heart. So even if s/he isn't there with you, your connection to him/her will never disappear. And while you may not directly experience the joy s/he brings to his/her adoptive parents, you can be sure it will be reflected in every letter, photo and phone call you receive from them.
